A VOIP Primer
A Buddy and I were talking about VOIP, as we were talking and since I sell VOIP, (BTW this is my Business Blog) he said “why would I try VOIP”.
There are literally millions of pages of specifications and references about the technical aspect of VOIP, he really wasn’t interested in finding out about VOIP that way. So I was thinking how do I tell you about VOIP without the millions of pages of documents of what VOIP is like and why is there so many differences in the price, quality and reliability.
I was eating a hot dog , which by the way I like a good hot dog and sometimes a HOT dog is the only thing that would be good. I was also thinking about putting a roast on the Bar B Que this weekend and the phone rang. I was multitasking.
OK back to the VOIP thing, The phone did not literally ring, it is a telco techie term for “the light came on” or “that works”
So here is the difference. We are going to compare hot dogs to VOIP. Actually not, we are going to compare MEAT with VOIP. There is good Hot dogs and bad hot dogs we all know that. There is also good Prime rib and bad prime rib. Stick with me here we will get to the VOIP thing I promise. They are all meat.
Same with VOIP. I surely wont pay prime rib price for a hot dog, but I wont frequent a place that sells bad hot dogs either. The VOIP Industry is that way right now and likely to stay that way for some time. There is hot dog kind of VOIP and then there is Prime Rib VOIP. Prime RIB VOIP normally costs a little more. HOT dog VOIP is good for certain times as well.
There are a couple of things I want to get out of the way. Although your OLD phone will work with VOIP, your going to need a device that will convert it to VOIP. It is like a power adaptor. Only it is for telephones. it is called an ATA an Analog Telephone Adapter.
Some companies will give you one when you buy their service. Or let’s put that right they will give you one that works with their service only (LOCKED). If you leave their service they will either charge you for it or make you return it. A good deal either way because they cost anywhere from 30 to 100 dollars. The companies that do this normally don’t let you use your own. Some also let you buy their locked device and they give you free service for a while. We will call this HOT DOG VOIP, good but not great but heck fast easy and cheap is good.
ON the other hand
Some companies will sell you one that is UNLOCKED, or you can use one you buy yourself with their service as well. Also a good deal. But this is an indicator also … the company with unlocked devices are normally better services. They have to be, as the only way they are going to keep you as a customer is with better service. “COOL HUHN” We are talking some GOOD HOT DOG VOIP here. insert many pages of why this takes more work on the suppliers side.
If they offer both we are talking even better. Some short notes here. Free is good , talking about free … tommorow is supposed to be hot day and at Home Depot … free Hot dogs from the TRANE Air Conditoner guys.
So now lets talk about some PRIME RIB VOIP. My counter parts. Feature feature feature … being a telco guy I know that of all the features we put into phone systems about 2% are used on a daily basis. It really isn’t the whole feature set that is important. IT is, is the feature you want and need there,
For even a little bit more money, we can expect more features, and there are literally 2698 of them to choose from and no I am not going through them here. Ask your service provider if he has the feature you are looking for … anything you would want really they are all available everything you can imagine from simple voicemail to email to wake up and reminder calls.
Expect to go through a few before you find one that works for you.
So you want to try a VOIP call to see how the GOOD PRIME RIB VOIP sounds. Do it now call 404 563 7019 and I will most likely answer your call. I do sleep sometimes and I am in the Eastern Time zone .
You can also see the All Services link in the sidebar to see some of the offerings I have. If you don’t see what you want shoot me a line and we can work something out. Someday I might even list the 2698 features that are available.
So why would you try VOIP, maybe your looking for a feature that isn’t offered in your telephone service now. Maybe you want to expand out a little an old ailing telco company not willing to go the distance for you. Maybe a second line or maybe you just want a HOT DOG.
